The firm dates back to 1790 when John Oliver, the son of an Ironmonger, and James Elliot decided to set up a legal practice in Hawick. The firm operated through various different names until 1849 when the firm changed its name to George & James Oliver, and the Oliver name has continued in an unbroken line since.
